Information About Your Rehabilitation Therapy Services
Find more information about how to be prepared for your rehabilitation therapy services with NYU Langone’s Rusk Rehabilitation.
What is needed in order for me to schedule an appointment to see a therapist?
A prescription is required to receive therapy services. Acceptable prescriptions can be obtained from a physician, physician assistant (PA), or nurse practitioner (NP) who can assess your needs and issue a prescription if needed.
If you don’t have a provider, or would like to see one of our physiatrists who can determine your therapy needs, you may locate a physiatrist by searching for a physical medicine and rehabilitation specialist.
What should a prescription contain?
Prescriptions should contain your diagnosis and the type of therapy services that you need.
I have a prescription from my doctor from Florida; would that be sufficient?
For care being received in any New York location, the referral must be a New York prescription or within 25 miles from any New York state border.
How can I provide my prescription?
As soon as possible after scheduling your appointment, you will need to upload your prescription into your NYU Langone Health MyChart account. Instructions for uploading your prescription will be sent to you via email after scheduling your appointment. If you have an existing prescription in the system from an NYU Langone physician, no additional upload is necessary.
My insurance does not require a referral, why am I being asked for a prescription?
A referral and a prescription are two different things. A referral is an authorization from your primary care physician (PCP) referring you to an in-network specialist. Some insurance providers require a referral. A prescription is the written order for therapy from the referring physician.
