Improving Sperm Health

In addition to determining if any medical conditions or medications are causing infertility, your doctor ascertains if lifestyle habits are affecting fertility. The doctor may then recommend several steps that men can take to increase the chances of producing healthy sperm.

Preventing and treating sexually transmitted diseases, or STDs, such as gonorrhea, is important. Some STDs can lead to inflammation in the epididymis, which stores and transports sperm, thereby interfering with fertility. Doctors can prescribe medication to manage many types of STDs.

Stress should be limited, if possible, because it can interfere with reproductive hormones. Your doctor may also recommend limiting your consumption of alcohol, which can reduce testosterone levels.

Smoking cigarettes and using smokeless tobacco can affect fertility in men by damaging sperm. NYU Langone’s Tobacco Cessation Programs can help you quit.

Counseling

NYU Langone specialists understand that infertility can interfere with your wellbeing. Our trained staff can help you cope with any anxiety and stress associated with infertility and its treatment.

At NYU Langone, our experts offer individual and couples counseling, which can help improve communication and support.

Wellness Programs

NYU Langone experts offer integrative health and wellness programs to complement conventional infertility care. These include acupuncture, guided imagery, massage, and yoga, all of which can help with relaxation and stress relief.
