At NYU Langone, we offer a full range of mammography services to support your breast health.
Mammograms are X-rays of the breasts. There are two types reviewed and interpreted by NYU Langone’s imaging and radiology experts: screening and diagnostic.

Schedule Using Our App
If your doctor has ordered an imaging exam through your NYU Langone Health MyChart account, you can schedule most imaging exams using the NYU Langone Health app.
Learn MoreBreast cancer screening mammograms are for women who have no symptoms, problems, or concerns. A screening mammogram is recommended on an annual basis starting at age 40, unless a woman is at a high risk for breast cancer, in which case screening may begin earlier.
Diagnostic mammograms are performed if additional images are needed after a screening mammogram, or if a patient has a new symptom or concern such as feeling a new lump or is undergoing short-term follow-up for a finding that is likely benign.
Please keep the following in mind when preparing for your mammogram:
At NYU Langone, we are dedicated to making your mammogram experience as comfortable and stress-free as possible. Our compassionate team is here to guide you through every step of the process and answer any questions you may have.
On the day of your exam, bring your prescription if you did not fax it and your insurance card. Please bring any previous mammogram results, such as reports, films, or CD-ROMs, if they are available.
Your images are reviewed by a radiologist with expertise in breast imaging. If additional imaging is needed, our team can explain the next steps clearly. Most results are available within a few days.
A normal result means that no signs of breast cancer or other significant issues were found in the images. Your breast tissue may show natural changes, but there is nothing of concern. You will typically be advised to return for your next scheduled mammogram, usually in one year.
Abnormal results do not necessarily mean cancer is present. They may indicate you have dense breast tissue, cysts, or changes that need additional imaging or a biopsy for a closer look. If your results are abnormal, your doctor will explain what the findings mean and may recommend further tests. Most women with abnormal mammogram results do not have breast cancer.
Our doctors can help you navigate your test results and ensure you receive the best possible care.
The amount of radiation used in a mammogram is very small and poses minimal risk. Learn more about radiation safety at NYU Langone.
At NYU Langone, we use advanced equipment designed to minimize exposure to radiation while providing clear and accurate images. Our team ensures that each mammogram is performed with your safety and comfort in mind. The benefits of detecting potential issues early on far outweigh the risks.
