Level 2 Trauma Center

We are proud that the Trauma Center at NYU Langone—Suffolk has been designated as a Level 2 Trauma Center by New York State and the American College of Surgeons—one of only four community hospitals on Long Island to earn this designation. As an integral part of the region’s emergency medical services, we treat all trauma cases from the middle of Suffolk County to as far east as Montauk. The center provides care for fractures, falls, motor vehicle accidents, and other incidents that can cause moderate to life-threatening injuries.

What to Expect During Your Emergency Department Visit

While you are at the Emergency Department (ED), we assess your condition, provide the care you need, and help guide you through next steps in your treatment.

When you arrive, members of your care team quickly assess your condition and determine the best course of treatment. Your team may include a doctor, nurse practitioner, or physician assistant; a registered nurse; and a nurse assistant. Because we are a teaching hospital, resident physicians (doctors in training) may also be involved in your care. Depending on your needs, other specialists may be consulted.

Below are some questions ED patients often ask.

Why have I been moved to a different room?

Your location may change based on your condition and care needs. For example, you may move from a treatment area to an observation area.

Why do staff members repeat the same questions?

Different team members may ask similar questions to confirm important details, such as your name, date of birth, symptoms, medications, and allergies. This safety step helps keep your information accurate and up to date so that we can make the right decisions quickly.

What security and safety measures are in place in the Emergency Department?

A security team is always present to enforce hospital policies and ensure a safe experience for patients, visitors, and staff members. To maintain a calm, healing environment, we ask everyone to treat one another with respect. Verbal or physical abuse of our staff is not tolerated and may result in removal from this facility and in some cases, legal action.
