About Me
I was born in India and moved at a young age to Jamaica, where I completed my high school education before migrating to the United States to attend college. I chose the specialty of head and neck cancer because I realized it was an area where I could make the greatest difference. As an immigrant, I wanted to give back to the community, and my goal has always been to do my best to elevate the care and treatment options I can give my patients. To this end, I have educated surgeons from around the globe to improve head and neck cancer care.
The head and neck cancer team at NYU Langone’s Perlmutter Cancer Center provides outstanding clinical care and the most novel and advanced treatment options, including clinical trials.
Head and neck cancer is a complex and diverse disease, but there are many different treatments available today. I believe that every patient is different, and each person’s needs should be accommodated by formulating and implementing a personalized treatment plan. At NYU Langone, we make sure we understand each patient’s cancer and treatment type through genetic testing to ensure that we provide the best and most effective treatment.
My research has focused on understanding the biology of head and neck cancer and devising minimally invasive techniques, such as robotic surgery, to treat this disease. This has contributed to developing and testing novel cancer therapies. I have also developed techniques to treat this disease more effectively while also minimizing deleterious side effects. My recent investigations have focused on understanding what makes patients sensitive to immunotherapy and other therapies, with the goal of testing and developing new and better combination treatments for head and neck cancer.
As a physician–scientist, I am excited by the latest advances in cancer research and new treatment paradigms that have directly improved patient outcomes. I am fervently committed to expanding cancer research and clinical care. My goal is to change the way we treat head and neck cancer, curing our patients while maintaining their functional outcomes.
I am a member of the American Academy of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery, the American Society of Clinical Oncology, and the American Head and Neck Society. I have published more than 150 research studies, and my work has been reported in many of the top peer-reviewed medical and cancer journals.
