Orthopedic and Sports Therapy

Injury to the bones, muscles, and joints can occur through sports, everyday activities, overuse, repetitive motion, poor training habits, or accidents. At Metro Physical Therapy at NYU Langone, we help treat a wide range of injuries and conditions, including:

  • back and neck injuries
  • overuse injuries
  • fractures and dislocations
  • repetitive-motion injuries
  • carpal tunnel syndrome
  • torn ligaments and muscles
  • shoulder, arm, wrist, and hand pain
  • leg, hip, knee, ankle, and foot pain
  • arthritis, bursitis, and tendinitis

Our goal is always to work with you to access your issues and get you back to doing the activities you love.

Occupational Therapy

Neurological, musculoskeletal, and congenital disorders can make everyday tasks more difficult, from buttoning your shirt to preparing meals.

Our occupational therapists create personalized treatment plans designed to improve your movement, independence, and quality of life. By focusing on fine motor skills and functional mobility, we help you regain the dexterity needed for daily activities.

Speech-Language Therapy

Our speech-language therapists evaluate and treat adults, children, and infants experiencing communication, swallowing, and voice disorders such as stuttering, memory impairment, and executive functioning disorders. Treatment can help reduce frustration and improve overall quality of life.

Work-Focused Rehabilitation and Worker’s Compensation Therapy

For injuries that occur at work, we take a customized approach based on the physical demands of each patient’s job. Patients are able to consistently and smoothly build strength, endurance, and confidence, allowing them to return to their work safely and sustainably.

Parkinson’s Therapy

Parkinson’s disease and other movement disorders often develop over age 50 and can affect strength, balance, and coordination.

Our therapists work closely with patients to help slow symptom progression and maintain independence. Through targeted therapy, we help improve flexibility, coordination, endurance, and overall mobility while reducing fall risk.

Acupuncture

In acupuncture, therapists use extremely thin needles to stimulate nerves in different parts of the body. This type of therapy can help with many conditions, such as:

  • postoperative pain and swelling
  • low-back and neck pain
  • sports-related injuries, including those that cause knee, hip, and shoulder pain
  • fibromyalgia
  • temporomandibular joint pain (TMJ) and facial pain
  • migraines
  • lymphedema
  • pelvic pain
  • cold and flu symptoms
  • asthma and sinus injections
  • allergies and autoimmune diseases

Our licensed acupuncturists also have extensive experience in massage therapy, nutrition, herbal medicine, and therapeutic exercise.

Aquatic Therapy

Aquatic therapy uses the buoyancy of water to reduce stress on the body, making movement and exercise easier and more comfortable. This helps patients improve strength, mobility, and confidence while making it more comfortable to return to everyday activities. This treatment can be especially beneficial for:

  • sports and orthopedic injuries
  • arthritis and osteoarthritis
  • rheumatoid arthritis
  • fibromyalgia
  • neurologic disorders
  • postsurgical pain and dysfunction
  • low-back pain and knee pain
  • balance impairments

Pelvic Floor Therapy

Pelvic floor therapy works to strengthen the muscles that support your bladder and bowel. These muscles are essential for sexual health and core stability. When they become weak or overactive, they can cause pain, pressure, incontinence, constipation, or nerve-related discomfort.

Taking a personalized approach, our experienced therapists identify the root of your symptoms and build a treatment plan tailored to your needs. We also collaborate with referring physicians and other specialists to ensure coordinated, whole-person care.

Schroth Method Therapy

Schroth Method therapy is designed to strengthen the spine and improve postural alignment for individuals with scoliosis. Through corrective breathing techniques and specialized exercises, patients can improve spinal positioning, reduce discomfort, and enhance overall function, whether or not surgery is part of their treatment plan.

Pediatric Therapy

Our pediatric therapists work to help children achieve their highest possible level of physical function and independence. We believe successful pediatric care requires engagement, encouragement, and collaboration with families.

Treatment plans are designed to support growth, development, strength, and mobility. Conditions we treat include:

  • torticollis, in which contractions in the muscles of the neck cause the head to tilt or turn to the side
  • autism spectrum disorders
  • cerebral palsy
  • Down syndrome
  • gross motor delays
  • muscular dystrophy
  • orthopedic conditions
  • spina bifida
  • gait and balance problems
  • strength and mobility impairments
  • scoliosis

Pilates Rehabilitation

Pilates rehabilitation supports both injury recovery and injury prevention. By emphasizing breathing, alignment, core stability, and spinal mobility, Pilates can improve flexibility and strengthen the body’s stabilizing muscles. We combine Pilates with physical therapy to create customized treatment plans that support recovery, movement, and overall wellness.

Neurological Therapy

Neurological therapy focuses on evaluating and treating movement disorders caused by neurological disease or injury. Metro Physical Therapy at NYU Langone specialists provide one-on-one care for patients with the following conditions:

  • stroke
  • spinal cord injury
  • traumatic brain injury
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • multiple sclerosis

Balance Problems

Balance disorders can cause dizziness, vertigo, instability, visual difficulties, and an increased risk of falls. Our therapists are trained to evaluate and treat balance issues related to neurological, orthopedic, and vestibular conditions.

Our goal is to help patients return to daily activities safely and confidently. Through education and therapeutic exercise, we work to improve strength, conditioning, balance, and overall function.

By making you stronger, we can help make everything you do safer.
