Orthopedic and Sports Therapy

Injury to the bones, muscles, and joints occur often, both from sports and from everyday activities. Accidents, muscle overuse, repetitive motion, lack of stretching, and poor training practices can all lead to injury. At Metro Physical Therapy at NYU Langone, we can help you with a number of injuries and conditions, including the following:

  • back and neck injuries
  • overuse injuries
  • fractures and dislocations
  • repetitive-motion injuries
  • carpal tunnel syndrome
  • torn ligaments and muscles
  • shoulder, arm, wrist, and hand pain
  • leg, hip, knee, ankle, and foot pain
  • arthritis, bursitis, and tendonitis

Our goal is always to work with you to access your issues and get you back to doing the activities you love.

Occupational Therapy

Neurological, musculoskeletal, and congenital disorders can make it more difficult to perform daily activities, such as buttoning your shirt or preparing meals.

Our therapists work with you to create treatment plans that focus on giving you as much freedom and movement and flexibility as possible. By targeting fine motor skills, our therapists can help you regain the dexterity you need to handle day-to-day responsibilities.

Speech-Language Therapy

Our speech-language therapists evaluate and treat adults, children, and infants who may have disorders related to communicating and swallowing, as well as voice disorders. In this way, we can help reduce frustrations and enhance quality of life. Stuttering, swallowing, memory impairments, and executive functioning disorder are just some of the issues we can help with.

Work-Focused Rehabilitation and Worker’s Compensation Therapy

For injuries sustained at work, we take a customized approach based on the movements and activities the job demands. Patients are able to consistently and smoothly build strength, endurance, and confidence, allowing them to return to their work safely and sustainably.

Parkinson’s Therapy

Parkinson’s disease typically develops after the age of 50. Our therapists work with patients to help manage this and other movement disorders to slow down the development of symptoms effectively.

Our skilled rehabilitation therapy can help those diagnosed with one of these conditions stay strong, active, and independent. By working to improve flexibility and strength, we can help prevent falls and improve coordination, strength, and endurance.

Acupuncture

In acupuncture, therapists use extremely thin needles to stimulate nerves in different parts of the body. This type of therapy can help with many conditions, such as:

  • postoperative pain and swelling
  • low-back and neck pain
  • sports-related injuries, including those that cause knee, hip, and shoulder pain
  • fibromyalgia
  • temporomandibular joint pain (TMJ) and facial pain
  • migraines
  • lymphedema
  • pelvic pain
  • cold and flu symptoms
  • asthma and sinus injections
  • allergies and autoimmune diseases

Our acupuncturists are licensed in both acupuncture and massage therapy and have an extensive background in nutrition, herbal medicine, and therapeutic exercise.

Aquatic Therapy

Due to water’s buoyancy, aquatic therapy can be done nearly weightlessly. It can be especially useful for conditions like these:

  • sports and orthopedic injuries
  • arthritis
  • osteoarthritis
  • rheumatoid arthritis
  • fibromyalgia
  • neurologic disorders
  • postsurgical pain and dysfunction
  • low-back pain and knee pain
  • balance

By making it easier to exercise, aquatic therapy has helped many return to their daily activities more easily.

Pelvic Floor Therapy

Pelvic floor therapy works to strength the muscles that support your bladder and bowel. These muscles are essential for sexual health and core stability. When they become weak or overactive, they can cause pain, pressure, incontinence, constipation, or nerve-related discomfort.

Taking a personalized approach, our experienced therapists identify the root of your symptoms and build a treatment plan tailored to your needs. We also collaborate with referring physicians and other specialists to ensure coordinated, whole-person care.

Schroth Method Therapy

Designed to strengthen the spine and give it a more neutral curve, Schroth Method therapy is helpful for patients who have scoliosis, including those undergoing rehabilitation, regardless of whether they had or intend to have surgery. Through corrective breathing and exercises to contract the muscles, those affected are able to achieve better alignment of their spine and reduce any accompanying pain.

Pediatric Therapy

Our goal as physical therapists for your child is to ensure that their physical capabilities for everyday activities are the best that they can be.

A child with a disability or accident-related injury needs to be engaged during treatment, and a positive attitude is essential for successful care. We will work with you and your child to develop a treatment plan that enhances growth and development. Below are just some of the conditions we treat:

  • torticollis, in which contractions in the muscles of the neck cause the head to tilt or turn to the side
  • autism spectrum disorders
  • cerebral palsy
  • Down syndrome
  • gross motor delays
  • muscular dystrophy
  • orthopedic conditions
  • spina bifida
  • gait and balance problems
  • impairments in strength and range of motion
  • scoliosis

Pilates Rehabilitation

Pilates rehabilitation is for those who have been injured and for those trying to prevent injuries in the future. Emphasizing breathing, alignment, and spine mobility, Pilates improves flexibility and builds strength in the small stabilizing muscles to improve overall body function. We work to combine physical therapy and Pilates in a customized treatment plan to help restore your body and overall health.

Neurological Therapy

A neurologically trained physical therapist specializes in the evaluation and treatment of individuals with movement problems related to disease or a nervous system injury. Metro Physical Therapy at NYU Langone’s expert care providers work one-on-one with patients to offer specialized intervention. We help patients with these and similar conditions:

  • stroke
  • spinal cord injury
  • brain injury
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • multiple sclerosis

Balance Problems

Issues with balance can lead to dizziness and vertigo, the feeling of falling, difficulty reading or seeing, and many other symptoms. Our therapists are skilled at detecting and treating such problems, whether they are caused by neurologic and orthopedic problems or inner ear (vestibular) disorders.

Our goal is to help you return to full function quickly and safely. We educate you about your condition, treatment options, and ways to avoid falls and other problems. We will also help you improve your strength and conditioning through therapeutic exercise. By making you stronger, we can help make everything you do safer.
