Pediatric Patient Safety & Quality

At Hassenfeld Children’s Hospital at NYU Langone, we are committed to providing the highest quality, safest medical care. Our work is driven by these foundational beliefs:

  • The best care is achieved when our healthcare teams actively partner with patients and families.
  • Our collaboration with expert colleagues from across the nation accelerates our advances in the treatment of pediatric illness and the delivery of the safest care.

Patients and Families as Partners in Safety and Quality

We recognize that children and families are essential partners in our safety and quality efforts, a mission supported by the Sala Institute for Child and Family Centered Care.

This partnership is evident at the bedside, where we invite parents to Family-Centered Rounds and nursing shift reports. These key safety practices are designed to ensure that parents understand the treatment plan. We also encourage you to ask questions, share how your child feels or responds to certain medications or treatments, and provide information specific to your child. Your input, observation, and participation help us keep your child as safe as possible.

“As a family advisor, I help create resources that support families to be partners in their children’s safety.”

Sara, Family Advisor

Our commitment to partnership is also evident in the way we discuss and plan patient safety and quality initiatives with our Family Advisory Council, which includes parents whose children have received care here, and our Youth Advisory Council, which is made up of teenaged patients. Families and teens are also integral members of our improvement teams and our Hassenfeld Children’s Hospital Quality and Safety Committee.

Collaboration with National Experts

Our commitment to the highest quality care and safety is evident in many ways. As a committed member of the Children’s Hospitals’ Solutions for Patient Safety, an international network of children’s hospitals, we are proud to work in collaboration with more than 130 children’s hospitals across the United States and Canada to create a universally safe environment for all children. We believe that our focus on safety and our efforts to eliminate preventable harm lead to the best possible outcomes for the children in our care.

“Nurses share knowledge and engage families as partners in safe care. This is some of the most meaningful work we do.”

Greta, Nurse Manager

Our teams, made up of doctors, nurses, pharmacists, family members, and other healthcare professionals, work to prevent the most common risks that may affect children who are in the hospital. Some of these include the following:

  • central line–associated blood stream infections
  • catheter-associated urinary tract infections
  • pressure injuries
  • adverse drug events
  • surgical site infections

We also participate in numerous national initiatives to improve health outcomes for children. Our efforts encompass a wide range of conditions affecting children and include the following:
