Cynthia A. Fretwell, MD

I pursued a career in medicine because I love working with people and I wanted to be able to help underserved populations. I lived in Puerto Rico as a teenager and witnessed a great deal of poverty and lack of resources. During that time, I was able to shadow a family practitioner and I observed a home birth. I was absolutely amazed and decided then that I would study to become an obstetrician and gynecologist.

I am currently the medical director of NYU Langone Hospital—Long Island's Women’s Wellness, which is an outreach program for women who need prenatal and gynecologic care. Many do not speak English and have had minimal obstetrical care. I provide necessary care and help these women manage high-risk conditions, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and obesity.

As part of NYU Langone Hospital—Long Island, we provide comprehensive obstetrical and gynecological care. We perform all obstetrical sonograms on site, and perform colposcopies, endometrial biopsies, and loop electrosurgical excision procedures (LEEP) in our office. High-risk consultation, social work counseling, and nutritional counseling are also available to our patients on site.

Our staff is friendly, warm, and bilingual. We are very sensitive to patient’s unique social problems. We go out of our way to help our patients navigate through the system and make necessary appointments for them. I get to know my patients very well and try my best to provide the most superior care possible.

I am a fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and I received the Attending of the Year Award in 2012 and 2017.
