Sabrina M. Strickland, MD

I am an orthopedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine, with expertise in knee and shoulder surgery. As director of the Center for Patellofemoral Disorders, I perform patellofemoral replacements, patellar stabilization procedures, and patellar cartilage transplantation. I also treat common sports-related injuries, including ACL and meniscus tears, with a focus on preserving the joint, as well as rotator cuff and labral tears. I have been named a Castle Connolly Top Doctor for the past 10 years and have repeatedly been recognized as a Castle Connolly Exceptional Woman in Medicine. Most important, I am committed to helping my patients return to the activities they love and maintain lifelong health.

My interest in medicine began in fifth grade, when a teacher sparked my curiosity about science through organ dissections and laboratory visits. Later, after having spine surgery in high school, I experienced firsthand how transformative orthopedic care can be. That experience shaped my decision to become an orthopedic surgeon and continues to guide how I care for my patients.

I believe trust begins with shared experiences and open communication. I emphasize patient education and shared decision-making, and I encourage patients to ask questions about their condition. Because many conditions have more than one appropriate treatment option, I work with patients to choose the path that best fits their lifestyle and long-term goals.

Research is central to my practice and to improving patient care. For more than 30 years, I have studied surgical outcomes to understand how technical refinements can improve results. My work has included using 3D-printed models to evaluate abnormal anatomy and refine surgical techniques, as well as participating in clinical trials focused on joint-preserving innovations, such as implants designed to unload the joint, synthetic cartilage, and stem cell treatments.

On a personal note, my husband, Andreas H. Gomoll, MD, also a surgeon at NYU Langone Orthopedics, and I share five children. Through our family’s experiences with athletics, we understand the highs and lows, joys and challenges that come with an active life. From our own love of skiing and racquet sports to our children’s involvement in Nordic and downhill ski racing, volleyball, rowing, track, and swimming, we empathize with patients for whom movement is often central to life.
