Andreas H. Gomoll, MD

I am an orthopedic surgeon specializing in joint preservation and sports medicine. In my role as the co-director of the Knee Preservation Center, I treat the full spectrum of knee problems, from ACL tears, patellar instability and meniscus injuries in young athletes, to cartilage defects and early arthritis in the middle-aged, all the way to partial joint replacement for older adults. I also care for patients with biceps disorders and other shoulder injuries, including those of the rotator cuff.

After more than 20 years in orthopedics, I found my passion in joint preservation because it allows me to care for patients over time and offers a range of solutions tailored to their needs and goals. Whether the goal is to return to high-impact sports or simply move more comfortably through everyday life, I work with each person to determine the approach that best fits their lifestyle.

Building a strong relationship with my patients is central to my approach to care, and I work to establish trust by listening carefully and giving them the time to talk through their concerns, priorities, and treatment options. Patients often tell me they appreciate having a thoughtful discussion about what matters most to them, rather than being rushed toward a single recommendation. No two knees or personal situations are ever the same, and I believe that treatment decisions should be made as a team, with a clear understanding of the available options and how each one fits within a patient’s lifestyle.

I regularly participate in clinical research and design and lead trials investigating new devices, injections, and therapies to better understand how we can improve care for future patients. My research interests include stem cell injections for early arthritis and the gamut of cartilage restoration techniques—for example, the innovative Cartiheal and MISHA Knee System implants. I am also involved in emerging research on stem cell therapies for cartilage defects, with the goal of expanding treatment options for patients in the years ahead.

I have been fortunate to receive clinical and teaching awards, including being named a Castle Connolly Top Doctor for over a decade, and honors for research in cartilage transplantation and joint preservation. While I value these recognitions, what matters most to me is using both experience and innovation to help patients regain function and return to the activities they enjoy.

On a personal note, my wife, Sabrina M. Strickland, MD, who is also a surgeon at NYU Langone Orthopedics, and I share five children. Through our family’s experiences with athletics, we understand the highs and lows, joys and challenges that come with an active life. From our own love of skiing and racquet sports, to our children’s interests in Nordic and downhill ski racing, volleyball, rowing, track and swimming, we empathize with our patients for whom movement is often central to life.
