Modern cerebrovascular care requires a comprehensive, patient-centered approach that integrates multiple treatment modalities, advanced technology, and close collaboration among specialists. Continued innovation in both technique and teamwork has expanded the ability to tailor treatment with greater precision, safety, and durability for patients with complex stroke and neurovascular disease.

In my clinical practice, I offer both minimally invasive endovascular and open microsurgical cerebrovascular treatment options. This dual expertise allows me to select and tailor the approach that is best suited to each individual patient, rather than being limited by a single modality. I specialize in the treatment of acute stroke and conditions that place patients at high risk for stroke, including moyamoya disease, intracranial atherosclerotic disease, cervical carotid stenosis, carotid web. I also care for patients with disorders that cause or predispose to intracranial hemorrhage, such as brain aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations, and arteriovenous fistulas.

I am originally from Israel and served for seven years in the Israeli Air Force prior to medical school, where I flew advanced jet aircraft. That experience fostered a deep appreciation for precision, preparation, situational awareness, and teamwork in high-stakes environments. These principles continue to shape my approach to surgery, leadership, and system design. I currently serve as chief of the Division of Vascular and Endovascular Neurosurgery and director of the NYU Langone Center for Stroke and Neurovascular Diseases, roles in which I apply these same principles to building integrated teams and leading complex clinical and academic initiatives.

At NYU Langone, vascular and endovascular care is delivered within a single, integrated division that includes vascular neurologists, neurointerventional radiologists, and vascular neurosurgeons. We work with a strong culture of collegiality and camaraderie, collaboratively evaluating patients, planning treatment strategies, and performing complex procedures as a unified team. This model ensures consensus-driven, comprehensive care and allows seamless integration of clinical care, research, and education across NYU Langone Hospital, NYU Langone Hospital–Brooklyn, and NYU Langone Hospital–Long Island.

My research focuses on stroke mechanisms and cerebrovascular disease, with particular emphasis on the clinical and flow dynamics basis of carotid web, an underrecognized cause of stroke in younger patients. I am actively involved in clinical trials and multidisciplinary research initiatives aimed at advancing diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of neurovascular disease. I also collaborate with engineering groups and robotics developers to explore emerging technologies that may enhance both vascular and endovascular techniques, with the goal of improving procedural precision, safety, and reproducibility. Extracranial–intracranial (EC–IC) bypass surgery remains a major area of both clinical and research interest, particularly in refining patient selection and optimizing outcomes for complex cerebrovascular disease.

Education and mentorship are central to my work at NYU Grossman School of Medicine. I teach neurosurgery fellows, residents, and medical students and collaborate closely with fellowship leadership to support multidisciplinary training pathways in neurovascular and neurointerventional care. I am particularly interested in integrating advanced simulation, emerging technologies, and team-based training into surgical education. I believe that mentoring the next generation of physicians and surgeons is a core responsibility of academic medicine, and I was honored to receive the Teacher of the Year Award in 2020.
