NYU Langone orthopedic experts and infectious disease specialists help prevent bone infections from returning. Our doctors sometimes perform blood tests to monitor for signs of infection and to ensure that treatment is effective.
Many bone infections are cleared with medication, surgery, or a combination of the two. However, for some people, osteomyelitis may never completely go away. The bacteria or fungi can lie dormant in the body and return, even after treatment.
Recurrent infections, or “flares,” typically occur in the same spot as the original infection. If you experience a flare, NYU Langone doctors can prescribe medication to manage your symptoms or perform surgery to remove dead or damaged tissue.
