What Sets Us Apart

Kaposi sarcoma is a rare form of cancer caused by human herpesvirus 8. Lesions may develop on the skin and in the lining of the mouth. Kaposi sarcoma tumors can also form in different organs and systems of the body, such as the respiratory system and the gastrointestinal tract. A tumor may also arise in the lymph nodes—small glands that make and store lymphocytes, white blood cells that help fight infection. This cancer is more common in people who have human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), because they have weakened immune systems.

NYU Langone physicians were among the first to recognize Kaposi sarcoma in people with HIV infection or AIDS in the 1980s. They have extensive experience in diagnosing and managing several types of Kaposi sarcoma.

Treatment at NYU Langone

Doctors use local therapies, which are treatments delivered directly to Kaposi sarcoma lesions on the skin or in the mouth. These therapies include topical medications, surgery, and radiation therapy. They also use intravenous medications to manage lesions throughout the body. Antiretroviral therapy is an integral part of care for people who have HIV infection or AIDS.
