Everyone feels sad, blue, or disappointed at times. These feelings are usually temporary and pass within a few days. However, when feelings of sadness, hopelessness, or worthlessness persist and begin to interfere with your daily life, this may be a sign of depression.
If you are experiencing these feelings, the mental health specialists at NYU Langone Psychiatry Associates can help to determine the cause and best course of treatment. As part of our Mood Disorders Consultation Service, our experts manage all types of depression in adults, including major depressive disorder, postpartum depression, and persistent depressive disorder.
Our specialists also treat children with mood disorders at NYU Langone’s Child Study Center.
Treatment of depression in adults often includes psychotherapy, medication, or a combination of both. Our specialists may recommend electroconvulsive therapy, in which an electric current is used to alter brain chemistry, for people with severe symptoms of depression that have not been relieved by other treatments.
