What Sets Us Apart

Acoustic neuroma, also called vestibular schwannoma, is a benign brain tumor that develops on the nerves that run between the inner ear and the brainstem. At NYU Langone, neurosurgeons, neurotologists, radiation oncologists, and imaging experts work together to evaluate and treat people who have these tumors, while attempting to preserve their hearing, facial movement, and facial sensation.

Physicians at NYU Langone use sophisticated imaging and hearing testing to diagnose acoustic neuromas, offer advanced approaches to surgery, and provide highly targeted radiation treatment called stereotactic Gamma Knife® radiosurgery.

At NYU Langone’s Perlmutter Cancer Center, a National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center, we personalize the care of every patient.More About Perlmutter Cancer Center

CLINICAL TRIALS and Research Studies

Our teams of physicians and scientists work together across multiple disciplines to bring our patients the most innovative clinical trials.Find a Clinical Trial

NYU Langone is a high-volume center for acoustic neuroma treatment; this means that our doctors treat a large number of people with these tumors compared with other hospitals in the New York area and throughout the United States.

After treatment, our specialists can help fit you with hearing aids, bone conduction devices, or cochlear implants to help restore any hearing loss you may have experienced. Our physicians can also manage facial nerve problems, when they rarely occur, with rehabilitation and reanimation, medical approaches that restore nerve function.

Treatment at NYU Langone

Treatment of acoustic neuroma may include watchful waiting, which includes regular imaging tests. Our experts may also recommend surgery to remove the tumor, or radiosurgery, which is the delivery of a single, precise dose of high-level energy, or radiation, to destroy tumor cells.
