Our Services

Oculoplastic Surgery

We have doctors in Manhattan and Brooklyn.

At NYU Langone, our oculoplastic surgeons offer compassionate, individualized care for a wide range of eye conditions. We provide thorough evaluations to accurately diagnose your condition and tailored treatment plans that include surgery when necessary.

Oculoplastics is a unique specialty that combines the expertise of ophthalmic surgeons—ophthalmologists with advanced training in eye surgery—and plastic surgeons specializing in reconstructive and cosmetic procedures. Together, our oculoplastic team has decades of experience and provides advanced care to enhance eye health, function, and appearance. We are exceptionally skilled in treating a wide range of conditions affecting the eye and eyelids.

Comprehensive Eyelid Care

Our surgeons create personalized care plans for a wide variety of eyelid conditions, including these:

  • chalazion, or a blocked gland
  • eyelid lesions, including cancer
  • misdirected lashes
  • blepharospasm, or twitching

Our experts also perform the following eyelid procedures:

  • surgery for malposition or droopy eyelids, known as ptosis or dermatochalasis, and droopy brows
  • reconstruction after trauma or Mohs surgery for skin cancer
  • rehabilitative surgery for eyelid retraction caused by thyroid eye disease
  • cosmetic eye lid surgery, also known as blepharoplasty, and brow lift
  • surgery for facial nerve disorder that produces incomplete eyelid closure

Advanced Solutions for Eye Surface Injury

Our ophthalmic surgeons treat eye or ocular surface injuries using advanced surgical procedures.

We perform reconstruction of the fornix—the area where the clear tissue covering the white of the eye meets the inside of the eyelids to form a pocket allowing the eyelids to move freely. Burns or autoimmune diseases can cause fornix injuries.

Our specialists also offer corneal neurotization, a surgery to treat the cornea (the clear front part of the eye) after it has lost its normal sensation because of nerve damage known as neurotrophic keratitis.

Specialized Tear Duct Procedures

Our oculoplastic team diagnoses and treats absent or blocked tear ducts and chronic infections and inflammation of the tear ducts. We specialize in surgical techniques, including a nasal endoscopic approach, to restore proper tear drainage and prevent further complications.

Highly Skilled Anophthalmic Socket Care

An anophthalmic socket refers to the empty orbital cavity that remains after the surgical removal of an eye or when the eye is absent because of a congenital condition. These are some of the procedures our surgeons can perform in such cases:

  • removing painful blind eyes
  • expanding the eye socket for an ocular prothesis
  • removing an implant after it has moved in the socket or been exposed because of tissue thinning
  • cosmetic procedures to treat the loss of an eye or post-traumatic injuries affecting the eye

State-of-the-Art Orbital Procedures

Our surgeons specialize in performing orbital decompression surgery to treat bulging eyes caused by conditions such as thyroid eye disease and orbital reconstruction procedures, including fracture repair. Our surgeons also specialize in evaluating orbital tumors and treating them surgically when necessary.

Care for Congenital and Pediatric Eye Conditions

Specialized care for congenital and pediatric conditions is available from our surgeons and includes treatment for the following:

  • eyelid malposition, such as droopy lids (also known as congenital ptosis, epiblepharon, or blepharophimosis)
  • tearing disorders
  • complications of microphthalmos (abnormally small eyes)

Whatever the condition, our team of oculoplastic surgeons is here to address any concerns and to offer compassion and support throughout treatment.
