Center for Neuromodulation

Neuromodulation is a technique that uses implanted devices and other means to modify the abnormal nervous system activity found in several neurological disorders. First introduced more than half a century ago, it is now a well-established technology that has changed the lives of hundreds of thousands of people.

NYU Langone’s Center for Neuromodulation is one of the first centers in the country to provide a full spectrum of this type of therapy for patients with conditions that include:

• movement disorders including Parkinson’s disease, essential tremor, dystonia, Tourette syndrome, torticollis, and spasticity
• chronic pain of the trunk and limbs resulting from failed back surgery syndrome, complex regional pain syndrome, and peripheral neuropathy
• facial pain headache and headache syndromes, including occipital neuralgia, migraine, and cluster headache, trigeminal neuropathic pain, supraorbital and infraorbital neuralgia, posttraumatic headache, hemicrania continua, trigeminal autonomic cephalalgia, and post-craniotomy pain
• psychiatric disorders, including obsessive-compulsive disorder and depression

Our techniques include deep brain stimulation, high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU), spinal cord stimulation, occipital nerve stimulation, peripheral neurostimulation, intrathecal pump implantation, as well as lesioning techniques such as radiofrequency rhizotomy, glycerol rhizotomy, and Gamma Knife^® radiosurgery.
