Cardio-Oncology Conditions We Treat
Experts in the Cardio-Oncology Program at NYU Langone Heart prevent and treat cardiovascular complications that may arise from cancer treatment. These complications are known as cardio-oncologic conditions and may include the following.
- cardiac tumors, which can be noncancerous (benign) or cancerous
- cardiomyopathy or heart failure
- congestive heart failure, which is caused by fluid buildup in the lungs, legs, or abdomen
- coronary artery disease
- heart attack, also known as myocardial infarction
- heart disease
- heart rhythm disorders, including atrial fibrillation (AFib) and atrial flutter and other types of arrhythmias
- heart valve disease, or valvular disease, including mitral valve and aortic valve disease
- hypertension, commonly known as high blood pressure
- lipid disorders (e.g., high cholesterol)
- myocarditis, or inflammation of the heart muscle
- pericarditis, which is inflammation of the pericardium, the thin membrane surrounding the heart
- pericardial effusion, the abnormal accumulation of fluid in the pericardium, or other types of pericardial disease
- thromboembolism, or a blood clot that forms in a vein, often deep in the legs and known as deep vein thrombosis; if the clot breaks loose, it can travel to the lungs, causing a pulmonary embolism
- vasospasm, or the temporary narrowing of a blood vessel
