Weight Loss Surgery for Adolescents
For some teenagers, diet and exercise are not enough to help them achieve a healthy weight, so weight loss surgery can be beneficial.
At NYU Langone’s Weight Management Program, we work together with experts from the Adolescent Healthy Weight Program to provide treatment to teenagers who would benefit from weight loss surgery. Our bariatric surgeons have some of the most extensive experience in the United States in performing laparoscopic bariatric surgery for teenagers. All care for children is provided through Hassenfeld Children’s Hospital at NYU Langone.
We care for teenagers who have a body mass index of 35 or greater and whose weight is affecting their physical and emotional health. Teenagers in this group are at an increased risk of asthma, diabetes, sleep apnea, high blood pressure, liver disease, and bone and joint problems, both in adolescence and in adulthood. Anxiety, depression, and social challenges are also common in teens with obesity.
All of our patients are evaluated by a pediatric obesity specialist from the Adolescent Healthy Weight Program and a bariatric surgeon from the Weight Management Program. They decide, with parental input, whether weight loss surgery is the best treatment option, and if so what procedure would yield the desired results.
