Advanced Cardiac Imaging for Children

At Hassenfeld Children’s Hospital at NYU Langone, we offer all types of modern cardiac ultrasound, including transthoracic, transesophageal, and fetal echocardiography, in a laboratory accredited by the Intersocietal Accreditation Commission (IAC). We perform more than 5,000 imaging studies each year, including more than 2,200 fetal and 300 transesophageal studies, or imaging studies performed through the esophagus.

We’re also dedicated to providing the most advanced cardiac MRI and CT angiography services, performing more than 150 each year in children and adults with congenital heart disease. Our pediatric cardiologists work closely with pediatric and cardiac radiologists to decide on the best form of imaging for each young patient.

We are pioneers in three-dimensional printing to create a hands-on model of a child’s heart. This allows for better surgical and interventional decision making. We have created 40 three-dimensional models, and have generated an additional 26 virtual models over the last 3 years.

Our current MRI and CT systems provide noninvasive, high-quality cross-sectional images of the heart and blood vessels from any orientation. We limit your child’s radiation exposure during these tests as much as possible. Our imaging results provide excellent dynamic and quantitative information for physicians to evaluate the complex anatomy of the heart.

Our renowned physicians also conduct scientific research on the development and optimization of advanced MRI techniques, and on reducing the dose of ionizing radiation for children.
