When getting a good night’s sleep becomes troublesome, or you are having difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep, doctors at NYU Langone Sleep Disorders Center—Garden City can help. Our experts identify sleep disorders in adults and children, such as snoring, excessive daytime sleepiness, and insomnia, as well as sleep conditions, including narcolepsy, obstructive and central sleep apnea in adults and in children, and nocturnal eating syndrome. We also diagnose shift work sleep disorder, sleep deprivation, restless legs syndrome, and rapid eye movement (REM) behavior disorder—a condition that causes people to physically act out their dreams.
To make an accurate diagnosis, we conduct a sleep study, or polysomnogram. These studies take place in our on-site sleep lab and can be conducted either overnight or during the day, to fit your needs. The study records your brain waves, breathing, heart rate, and the oxygen levels in your blood. A sleep technologist remains present throughout the testing.
Experts in Sleep Medicine
We are the first sleep disorders center in Nassau County to be accredited by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine.
We also provide home studies, during which you use wearable devices that capture and send data to our team. On-site studies are held in one of our 10 tranquil suites. Each has a private, handicapped-accessible bathroom and shower, a flat-screen TV with streaming options, a thermostat to control heat and air-conditioning, and access to a shared kitchen and lounge. Pediatric suites have cribs for children age 2 months and older, with hotel-style beds for parents. We also have custom-built accomodations for people who have obesity.
Our doctors work with a team of experts, including cardiologists, neurologists, otolaryngologists, pediatricians, pulmonologists, psychiatrists, and specialists in behavioral sleep medicine, to help diagnosis and manage your condition.
We partner with you and your family to develop a complete care plan, and offer treatment options that may include behavioral therapy, lifestyle changes, medications, and equipment, such as a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) or a custom-fit dental device.
For adults with central sleep apnea, we also work closely with the cardiology team at NYU Langone Island Cardiac Specialists—Garden City to implant a device that stimulates the chest nerve that sends signals to the diaphragm to activate breathing, helping to ease sleep apnea symptoms.
We require a physican referral before you can schedule a sleep study. Patients come to us through many different specialists, including the physicians at NYU Langone Sleep Medicine Associates—Garden City. You can also call 516-663-3907 to learn more about scheduling an appointment.
