As a primary care physician and clinician-educator at NYU Langone, I am dedicated to fostering strong patient relationships and promoting proactive healthcare engagement. My philosophy, inspired by my early experiences with a kind family physician in the Bronx, is to help each patient become all they are capable of being. I believe in the importance of comprehensive, coordinated care and strive to provide a seamless healthcare experience for my patients.

I specialize in internal medicine, with a particular focus on managing chronic conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular diseases. I have honed my skills in both emergency medicine and medical toxicology. My extensive training at Bellevue and my role as an author and editor of Goldfrank's Toxicologic Emergencies underscore my commitment to medical excellence and patient care.

Throughout my career, I have been deeply involved in medical education. I co-founded the Emergency Medicine Residency Program and a Medical Toxicology Fellowship at Bellevue, and I currently serve as the director of Didactic Education for the Emergency Medicine Residency. I am passionate about teaching and mentoring the next generation of physicians, and I lead the 'Lewin Morning Report,' a daily conference where we review interesting cases presented by our trainees.

My journey into medicine began at the University Heights campus of NYU, where I majored in history before attending SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University for medical school. My formative experiences during my Emergency Department rotation at King's County solidified my commitment to caring for acutely ill and socially disadvantaged patients. I am honored to have received numerous accolades, including the Druckenmiller Professor of Emergency Medicine, the Master Teacher Award from the SUNY Downstate Alumni Association, the Distinguished Teaching Award, and the Alpha Omega Alpha Volunteer Faculty Award from the NYU Grossman School of Medicine and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Ronald O. Perelman Department of Emergency Medicine.

Research Summary

As a child growing up in the Bronx, I had a kind family physician who trained at Bellevue hospital who told me if I ever wanted to become a great doctor I should train at Bellevue. I started my journey at NYU at the University Heights campus where I majored in history. I applied to SUNY Downstate and was fortunate to be accepted and to receive a scholarship and loans. My Emergency Department rotation at King’s County Hospital was formative for me as I learned to care for acutely ill patients, many of whom socially disadvantaged.

I fulfilled my dream, training as a Resident in Internal Medicine at NYU/Bellevue Hospitals and would also pursue Emergency Medicine and Medical Toxicology. Following residency, I started a solo private practice in Internal Medicine and became the part time Assistant Director of Bellevue’s Emergency Department. Later I co-founded the Emergency Medicine Residency Program and a Medical Toxicology Fellowship with Dr. Lewis Goldfrank. After fifty years at NYU/Bellevue I continue to see private patients and am the Director of Didactic Education of the Emergency Medicine Residency. I am also an author and editor of the last eleven editions of Goldfrank’s Toxicologic Emergencies, a textbook which is used in virtually all medical schools and Poison Control Centers in the country. I was honored to be named the Druckenmiller Professor of Emergency Medicine and Professor of Medicine and was awarded the Alpha Omega Alpha Volunteer Faculty Award at the NYU Grossman School of Medicine.

Teaching is my passion, and I am a member of my department’s educational leadership committee and I mentor and teach history-taking and physical examination to NYU medical students. I also supervise ‘Lewin Morning Report’, a daily conference where we review interesting cases presented by our trainees. In 2024 I was honored to receive a Lifetime Achievement Award for ‘humanism and teaching future generations of physicians’ in the Department of Emergency Medicine.

I am passionate about being a primary care physician as well as a clinician-educator. I am committed to the larger institution having served on our medical school’s admissions committee, quality safety and innovation committee, and our department’s promotions committee. My philosophy is ‘let each become all they are capable of being’ and ‘to Learn, to Search and to Serve’.
