Allison B. Deutch, MD

As a board-certified psychiatrist at NYU Langone, I specialize in reproductive psychiatry and consultation–liaison psychiatry. I provide psychiatric consultation to patients admitted to medical and surgical services at Tisch Hospital and Kimmel Pavilion and treat a variety of pregnancy and non-pregnancy related mental health conditions. With over a decade of clinical experience, I also serve as the director of reproductive consultation–liaison psychiatry and program director for the Women’s Mental Health Fellowship at NYU Langone. My focus is on enhancing inpatient screening and improving access to psychiatric care for pregnant and postpartum women. Our dedicated team of outpatient providers is also available for pre-conception psychiatric consultations, diagnostic evaluations, pharmacotherapy, and brief psychotherapy for reproductive related psychiatric symptoms.

Throughout my career I have collaborated closely with medical and surgical teams to ensure that mental health is prioritized alongside physical care. My research endeavors aim to improve patient outcomes and empower individuals to navigate their mental health journeys with confidence. I have co-authored several significant publications, including works on healthcare disparities in behavioral emergency management and psychiatric considerations in perinatal mental illness. My research on the psychological side effects of hormonal contraception and contraceptive counseling underscores the importance of validating patient experiences and fostering open communication between patients and physicians.

My journey into psychiatry began during a medical school rotation in child and adolescent psychiatry, which revealed the transformative power of mental health care. This experience ignited a passion that led me to pursue psychiatry as my true calling. My educational background, which includes a bachelor of science degree from Cornell University, a medical degree from SUNY Buffalo School of Medicine, and additional specialized training in general adult psychiatry from NYU School of Medicine Grossman, has equipped me with the skills and knowledge necessary to provide comprehensive and coordinated care. My personal childbirth experiences fuel my dedication to supporting women through the vulnerabilities inherent to pregnancy, childbirth, and motherhood.
