About Me
My interest in cardiology began when my father developed heart disease when he was very young. I began working with a cardiologist during summer vacations and then decided to become one myself.
During my residency, I heard a doctor say that women don’t get heart disease. I realized the field of women’s cardiology was lagging far behind that of men’s cardiology and decided to specialize in it. It shocked me that coronary and cardiovascular issues in women were so poorly understood, especially when risk factors in women often could be easily treated.
Patients began coming to me because they wanted more answers than their doctors were giving them about potential heart disease symptoms. This lack of dialogue was one of many inspirations for creating the Joan H. Tisch Center for Women’s Health at NYU Langone. It has everything women need for their healthcare—including experts in cardiology, internal medicine, gastroenterology, rheumatology, gynecology, and dermatology.
As a physician, I focus on a woman’s overall wellbeing. This means I listen to what a woman says about her symptoms. A patient’s family and medical history is my first priority when making a diagnosis. I often start visits by asking patients if they have a list of questions we can use to guide our conversation.
I believe a huge part of healthcare is prevention, and I stress the importance of activities, such as exercise, that could reduce the risk of heart disease. When a patient comes in and tells me she has started a preventive regimen I’ve suggested, it makes my day. When my patients take healthcare into their own hands and work to reduce their health risks, I know we’ve developed a successful partnership.
