Scarlett O. Murphy, MD

At NYU Langone, I serve as a pulmonary and critical care physician, delivering expert care to patients with a diverse range of lung diseases and critical illnesses. My passion for this field is driven by the opportunity to support patients during significant moments in their hospital journey and provide ongoing care in the clinic.

As an attending physician at NYU Langone Hospital—Brooklyn, I manage patients with complex respiratory conditions, such as acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), pneumonia, chronic respiratory failure, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) exacerbations, interstitial lung disease (ILD) flares, and pleural disease. I also address systemic causes of critical illness, including sepsis and diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA).

My practice encompasses performing flexible bronchoscopy, minimally invasive pleural procedures, endotracheal intubations, and the placement of central and arterial lines. Additionally, I am committed to educating the next generation of medical professionals, engaging with fellows, residents, and learners from various disciplines.

My research focuses on the clinical and genetic predictors of pulmonary fibrosis, a pursuit that intensified during the COVID-19 pandemic. As a front-line responder in New York City, I provided care to countless patients experiencing severe COVID-19-associated respiratory distress syndrome at the height of the pandemic, often under challenging circumstances. This experience fueled my interest in understanding COVID-19 recovery and the factors contributing to persistent respiratory illness after infection. An additional year of research following my fellowship was devoted to studying outcomes and identifying predictors of fibrotic lung disease after COVID-19, culminating in a master’s degree in patient oriented research from Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health.

Before my fellowship, I participated in a quality and safety fellowship sponsored by the Veterans Health Administration, which honed my skills in patient care and health system improvement.
