Kenneth Wald, MD

I have had an interest in medicine for as long as I can remember. This must have been innate, because I do not have any doctors in my family. Neither of my parents graduated from college, so their pride in me for becoming a doctor has been an added pleasure.

I truly enjoyed my four years of medical school. With each passing course, my interests shifted, until I landed on ophthalmology. A close childhood friend’s eye injury and the surgical efforts to repair the damage piqued my interest in vitreoretinal surgery.

A medical school rotation showed me the beauty of looking at the inside of the eye through a microscope and then performing complex, delicate procedures. The office-based practice of ophthalmology allows for long-term relationships with patients, and I love meeting people from all walks of life.

My mission has always been to be a great doctor and surgeon. During my years of clinical practice, I have been as surgically active as possible, gaining the skills and experience necessary to provide outstanding patient care. I use technical innovations in the field that have shortened surgical times and reduced the need for general anesthesia, and I enjoy helping underserved populations in New York City.

At NYU Langone, I am part of a brilliant, collegial, and enthusiastic group of doctors whose goal is to provide exceptional care. Some of the conditions I help manage include retinal tears and detachment, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, eye trauma, and complications of anterior segment surgery. I also love teaching our ophthalmology residents and fellows and conducting research in this specialty.

Despite nearly three decades as an ophthalmologist, I still have a lot to accomplish. I am fortunate to be in a perfect environment to pursue my interests.
