Marlis Gnirke, MD

At NYU Langone, I am passionate about serving the New York City community as an emergency medicine physician and medical toxicologist.

As an emergency medicine physician, I care for patients who present to the emergency department with any of a wide variety of acute conditions. I was drawn to the specialty of emergency medicine because I am fascinated by the entirety of medicine. I deeply value the diversity and teamwork that are inherent to the emergency department, and I am grateful for the opportunity to care for patients from all walks of life as part of a diverse and collaborative medical team, including nurses, social workers, technicians, and pharmacists as well as consultants from other medical specialties.

As a medical toxicologist, I consult on a range of poisonings, including overdose of pharmaceuticals, exposure to venomous animals and poisonous plants, and exposure to chemical products and environmental hazards. The breadth and depth of this subspecialty complement emergency medicine, and I find that understanding the underlying physiologic, pharmacologic, and biochemical mechanisms of toxicity strengthens and enhances my emergency medicine practice.

I have been in New York City since medical school and have completed both my residency and fellowship at NYU Langone. I know emergencies and poisonings are inherently frightening and vulnerable times in patients’ lives, and I strive to provide the most thorough and compassionate care I can. I believe in fostering strong partnerships with my patients and promoting a positive and supportive healthcare experience.
