Anne Skomorowsky, MD

I became a doctor to become a psychiatrist. I’ve always been fascinated by our thoughts, feelings, and motivations. I am interested in how chemicals, for example, medications, can make us feel one way or another, or cause us to see things differently. I’m also interested in the role that genes play in our thinking and our emotional experiences.

My attitude towards patients is that we are both working with limited knowledge, and we will figure out how to proceed together.

I treat mood disorders, anxiety disorders, and problems with adjustment to life circumstances. Sometimes people without psychiatric disorders face unexpected challenges, and I partner with them to find solutions.

I have a particular interest in fragile X syndrome and raising children with disabilities. My book, The Carriers, is about the effects of carrier status on parents of children with inherited disorders.

I also write for the general public. Currently I am working on a biography of a mid-20th century psychiatrist, Helen Flanders Dunbar, who has been called “the mother of psychosomatic medicine.”
