Sophia Y. Chen, MD, MPH

As a colorectal surgeon at NYU Langone, I specialize in treating a broad range of conditions, including colon, rectal, and anal cancers; diverticulitis; inflammatory bowel disease; and anorectal conditions such as hemorrhoids, fistulas, fissures, and abscesses. I tailor my approach to each patient’s unique needs, utilizing minimally invasive techniques like robotic and laparoscopic surgery to promote faster recovery whenever possible and performing open surgeries for more complex or reoperative cases. I collaborate closely with a multidisciplinary team—comprising specialists in medical and radiation oncology, gastroenterology, urology, plastic surgery, hepatobiliary surgery, gynecology, radiology, pathology, and primary care—to ensure every patient receives comprehensive, coordinated, and patient-centered care.

My dedication to medicine stems from an early desire to become a doctor, inspired by the values of compassion, humility, hard work, and perseverance instilled by my parents, whose sacrifices made my path to becoming a colorectal surgeon possible. During my surgical training, I was mentored by surgeons renowned not only for their technical skill and team-based approach to complex challenges but also for their empathy, honesty, and respect for every patient. These lessons remain foundational to my philosophy of care, which focuses on restoring health, agency, and quality of life for my patients.

Having supported a family member through surgery, I understand the profound trust and vulnerability that accompany the decision to undergo surgery. I view the opportunity to serve as my patients’ surgeon as both a privilege and a responsibility. From the first consultation through recovery and beyond, I am committed to providing compassionate, clear, and attentive care to my patients and their loved ones.

My research interests align with a commitment to advancing patient outcomes. Building on my background in cancer epigenetics, cancer immunotherapy, and large database clinical outcomes research, I work alongside NYU Langone and the Perlmutter Cancer Center to explore innovative strategies to enhance the field of colorectal surgery and improve both perioperative and long-term patient outcomes.
