Mary Jo Johnstone, MD

As an emergency medicine physician at NYU Langone, I’m committed to providing care that prioritizes wellness and empathy. I’m drawn to the dynamic pace, the diversity of patient cases, and the chance to connect with individuals from all backgrounds. It’s greatly fulfilling to advocate for those who may have been overlooked elsewhere, and this has become my mission.

My training allows me to provide emergency care to all age groups, making me a versatile physician ready to handle any situation that comes through the door. I serve as the medical director for patient experience in our emergency department and actively participate in community outreach. This involves educating and training community members to become responders in emergency situations.

Throughout my career, I’ve been dedicated to proactive engagement in healthcare. I’ve been fortunate to have mentors who showed me how even small acts of kindness can have a significant impact. During the COVID-19 pandemic, my colleagues and I faced challenging circumstances daily, reinforcing my pride in our work.

My path into medicine was sparked by a fascination with its unique combination of science and humanities. The intensity of the emergency department captivated me during my rotation in medical school, inspiring me to pursue a career in this field. As part of NYU Langone, I work closely with other healthcare professionals to ensure comprehensive and coordinated care for my patients. I genuinely care about my patients and strive to provide them with the highest standard of medical care, coupled with empathy and compassion.
