Manjool Shah, MD

As an ophthalmologist and member of the NYU Langone Eye Center, I use conventional and microinvasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS) techniques to treat patients who have glaucoma, a progressive eye disease that can damage the optic nerve. I also manage and treat other complex conditions in the front of the eye, including complex and dislocated cataracts, problems with intraocular lens implants, and issues affecting the iris and pupil. These issues may be the result of injury, previous procedures, or abnormalities present since birth.

Growing up, I knew I wanted to work in the sciences, but also knew I needed to use both sides of my brain. Medicine lets me engage with many different types of people, work with my hands and brain, and practice practical science. My surgical discipline allows me to practice highly technical and refined skills but also imbue a bit of creativity in my work, as many complex cases do not have a one-size-fits-all solution. I became passionate about ophthalmology during my third year of medical school, after observing cataract surgery for the first time. I was amazed by how elegant it was, and how this magical procedure could so powerfully change someone’s life.
 
Our knowledge of glaucoma and its treatment is undergoing a revolution, and that includes how and when we perform surgery and offer other interventions. As a glaucoma specialist, I’m excited to be part of this treatment revolution. I’m a firm believer in utilizing MIGS, minimally invasive glaucoma surgery, whenever possible, and am proud to be an early adopter in teaching and improving these procedures. By leveraging new technologies and utilizing traditional tried-and-true therapies when necessary, we strive to truly tailor therapy to each patient.
 
At the NYU Langone Eye Center, I harness top-tier imaging and diagnostic tools to develop a care plan and monitor each patient’s journey. I am proud to work with an outstanding team of colleagues, to ensure that each patient gets comprehensive care and access.

When I’m not caring for patients, I am dedicated to teaching residents and fellows through my work with multiple national societies as well as through my role as the program director for the NYU Langone Glaucoma Fellowship Program. Additionally, I have had the privilege of teaching clinical and surgical techniques to ophthalmology residents and glaucoma surgeons in Kenya, Nigeria, Peru, Nepal, and Jamaica, with the hope of expanding access to quality glaucoma care throughout the world.

I am committed to guiding people who have glaucoma and other complex eye conditions through all phases of treatment, seeking to optimize their quality of life and preserve their vision.
