Susan T. Mackey, PA

I began my career in chiropractic medicine, earning my doctorate of chiropractic cum laude from New York Chiropractic College and focusing on musculoskeletal and sports medicine in clinical practice for years. My work with athletes and patients with neurological symptoms sparked my passion for brain health and ultimately led me to pursue a master's in physician assistant studies at Stony Brook University, allowing me to specialize in neurology. My focus is on concussion and traumatic brain injury, conditions which align with my interests in sports, pediatrics, recovery, and overall quality of life.

During my career, I served as director of medicine and rehabilitation for the Dew Action Sports Tour, where I worked with elite athletes nationwide. This experience exposed me to the impact of concussive and traumatic brain injuries and emphasized the need for better understanding and care. It became a pivotal moment in shaping my dedication to concussion management and brain injury recovery.

I treat both pediatric and adult patients across NYU Langone locations, including NYU Langone South Shore Neurologic Associates. My practice focuses on concussion and traumatic brain injury, addressing post-concussion syndrome and post-traumatic headaches. I work closely with pediatric patients recovering from sports-related head injuries and collaborate with families navigating the return-to-school and return-to-sport processes. My care approach integrates clinical evaluation with structured protocols tailored to each unique patient.

Currently, I serve as a physician assistant and administrative PA coordinator for the NYU Concussion Center–Suffolk County at NYU Langone Hospital–Long Island. Through my work across various affiliate sites, I demonstrate my commitment to providing comprehensive neurological care.

With multidisciplinary expertise, including doctoral training in chiropractic, advanced training in physician assistant studies, and extensive experience in sports medicine, I bring a rare depth of knowledge to patient care. I remain at the cutting edge of brain injury treatment as an advisor for the Brain Injury Association of New York’s Concussion Initiative Advisory, focusing on legislation, policy, and best practices.

My patient care philosophy centers on personalized, collaborative, and education-driven recovery. I understand that brain injury recovery is not linear, and no two patients are alike. My priority is empowering patients and families with knowledge to make informed decisions throughout the healing process. I believe that understanding the “why” behind each step helps patients actively participate in their recovery.

For me, the most fulfilling aspect of my work is helping patients reclaim their lives after brain injuries. Whether it’s guiding a teenager back to school or supporting an athlete in returning to the sport they love, I value the opportunity to help patients feel seen, understood, and supported on their journey to recovery. Trust and connection are the driving forces behind my care.
