Marius E. Mayerhoefer, MD, PhD

As a radiologist at NYU Langone, I am dedicated to advancing the field of oncologic imaging to provide the highest level of patient care. Much like the legendary Muhammad Ali's quote: “Your hands can't hit what your eyes can't see,” my passion for radiology stems from the belief that our ability to visualize disease is crucial for effective treatment. Radiology allows us to make diseases, such as cancers, visible in great detail, not just in terms of structure but also metabolism and cellular characteristics. This detailed imaging enables clinicians to deliver the best possible care to our patients.

I specialize in whole-body magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), positron emission tomography (PET)/MRI, and PET/computed tomography (CT) for patients with blood cancers, including lymphoma, myeloma, and leukemia. With more than 20 years of experience, I have honed my expertise in multi-parametric functional and molecular imaging using advanced MRI techniques and novel PET tracers. These imaging methods are essential for the success of personalized and precision medicine. Additionally, I am deeply interested in assessing changes in the tumor microenvironment through imaging and the clinical application of artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms, which I believe will revolutionize our radiology workflow and enhance diagnostic capabilities.

Throughout my career, I have been committed to proactive healthcare engagement and research. I have published more than 160 peer-reviewed articles in prestigious journals such as Lancet Digital Health, Blood, and Clinical Cancer Research. My work has been recognized internationally, and I frequently speak and moderate at major conferences like the European Congress of Radiology. I also serve on the executive board of the European Society of Oncologic Imaging and am a fellow of the International Cancer Imaging Society, among other academic affiliations.

My journey into medicine was inspired by a desire to make a tangible difference in patient care through advanced imaging techniques. I pursued my medical and doctor of philosophy degrees with a focus on radiology, driven by the potential to improve diagnostic accuracy and treatment outcomes. At NYU Langone, I am proud to collaborate with a diverse team, ensuring comprehensive and coordinated care for our patients.
