Catherine Constable, MD

As an inpatient internal medicine specialist at NYU Langone, I specialize in inpatient internal medicine, which means that I take care of adults who are having a setback with their health that requires hospitalization. I have always valued the collegial environment in the hospital, and the chance to collaborate face-to-face with colleagues from all different disciplines. In my clinical role, and with help from these professional relationships, I work to help my patients return to doing whatever they love to do, and, more broadly, to honor whatever it is that they value.

I have dual appointments in NYU Langone’s Departments of Medicine, Hospitalist Division, and Population Health, Division of Medical Ethics. When I am not seeing patients, I lead the clinical ethics consult service for NYU Langone’s Tisch Hospital/Kimmel Pavillion, and teach medical ethics to students in the medical school, Masters in Bioethics Program, and in the undergraduate college.

I came to medicine through a focus in medical ethics. As an undergraduate interning in academic medical centers, I came to realize that my interest in clinical ethics went beyond the theoretical. My career merges a love of human biology and of philosophy. I derive great satisfaction from helping patients and their families process new information and navigate the forks in the road. These interactions are partnerships that draw from scientific data as well as the unique values of every patient and family unit. I feel fortunate to work in a field with all of these dimensions.
