From a very young age, I sang opera and jazz. Performing in choirs and chamber groups as a classically trained singer takes practice and precision, and everyone involved must work together. Performing surgery also requires teamwork and close attention to detail. In many ways, it is akin to making beautiful music.

I decided to go to medical school in part because I like to tackle problems head-on. I grew up riding horses and initially thought I would be an equine veterinarian. But vets’ options are often limited when complex or expensive problems surface. In human medicine, though, we are always pushing limits, trying to solve complex problems using the newest technology and science, and that appeals to me.

As a vascular surgeon, I operate on almost every part of the body. Most of the people I see through NYU Vascular and Endovascular Surgery Associates are older adults. I specialize in all areas of vascular care, including treatment for abdominal aortic aneurysm, peripheral arterial disease, and venous insufficiency.

I have researched and written articles about procedures to treat carotid artery stenosis, a buildup of fatty plaque in one or both arteries of the neck. Depending on individual anatomy, patient preferences, and other factors, I may use either traditional, open carotid surgery, also known as carotid endarterectomy, to clear the plaque, or transcarotid artery revascularization, a minimally invasive procedure.

People tell me I’m approachable and kind. When someone sees me, I explain the diagnosis and lay out potential options for treatment. Having patients involved in decision-making helps me understand what is important to them and how their conditions are affecting their life. Then I can recommend the approach that best aligns with a person’s goals, with the best risk-benefit profile for that individual. My patients appreciate that they feel heard, and that I take time to go through everything in detail.
