Erin F. Alaia, MD

As a musculoskeletal radiologist with expertise in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for sports injuries and post-operative evaluation, and an associate professor of radiology and orthopedic surgery at NYU Langone, I am dedicated to advancing the field of musculoskeletal radiology through collaborative research and education. My passion lies in helping patients achieve optimal health and wellness by providing precise and accurate imaging that guides effective treatment plans.

My expertise is focused on orthopedic sports MRI, with a particular focus on post-operative MRI in patients with sports injuries and MRI of the knee. With more than a decade of experience, I have developed a deep understanding of the complexities involved in diagnosing and managing sports-related injuries. My dual appointment in radiology and orthopedic surgery allows me to bridge the gap between imaging and clinical practice, ensuring a comprehensive approach to patient care. I am honored to be a member of the International Skeletal Society and to actively participate in the Society of Skeletal Radiology, the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA), and the American Roentgen Ray Society.

Throughout my career, I have been committed to proactive healthcare engagement and research. I have authored or co-authored more than 50 peer-reviewed scientific papers and have presented numerous scientific podium presentations at national meetings. My research efforts were recognized with an RSNA Research Seed Grant in 2022 for a project exploring the clinical utility of hip and knee MRI in older patients with atraumatic pain. I also regularly peer-review scientific manuscripts and serve on the consulting editorial board for Skeletal Radiology.

My journey into medicine was inspired by a desire to make a meaningful impact on patients' lives through advanced imaging techniques. I pursued my medical degree with a focus on radiology, driven by the potential to improve patient outcomes through precise diagnostics. As part of the NYU Langone team, I am committed to fostering a collaborative environment that prioritizes patient wellness and coordinated care. I am passionate about continuing to contribute to the field through research, education, and patient-centered care.
