Janet C. Rucker, MD

I became interested in science and biology when I was in high school, and I knew then that I would become a doctor. During medical school, I spent time with a mentor who specialized in neuro-ophthalmology. I was fascinated by how the brain controls vision and eye movements.

I care for patients who have a broad range of neuro-ophthalmologic conditions, including vision loss and eye movement problems. I specialize in managing abnormal eye movements, which can occur when a person has a brain tumor, stroke, multiple sclerosis, or another neurological condition.

My research team and I perform eye tracking, which involves using a special camera that samples eye movements 500 times per second. It can detect movements that cannot be seen with the human eye. We use the tracker to diagnose eye conditions and monitor patients’ progress after they receive treatment, which may include various medications. The tracker also helps us find new therapies and advance our understanding of how the brain works.

I take the time to explain conditions to patients and their referring doctors. I work with other neuro-ophthalmologists who have different areas of clinical and research expertise, such as those who specialize in the impact of multiple sclerosis and concussion on vision. I also collaborate with ophthalmologists, neurosurgeons, neurologists, radiologists, rheumatologists, and other specialists to provide patients with the best possible care.

Studying patients who have unusual eye movements helps improve the way movement disorders, such as Parkinson’s disease and parkinsonism, are diagnosed. My research on eye movement has been published in nearly 100 peer-reviewed publications, and I have written many review articles and book chapters.

I teach eye movement courses at regional and international medical conferences, including the World Congress of Neurology and the American Academy of Neurology. In 2021, I was honored to receive the Department of Neurology Innovator in Education award. In addition, I am a member of the American Academy of Neurology. I am an editorial board member of the Journal of Neuro-Ophthalmology.

I am devoted to and passionate about the field of neuro-ophthalmology. I feel fortunate to have the opportunity to help patients and work with my colleagues every day. I enjoy developing long-term relationships with patients and conducting research to advance knowledge in the field.
