Michael Silverman, MD

What first inspired me to pursue surgery was witnessing the profound, immediate impact I could have on a patient’s life through my work. I completed my residency at Emory University in Atlanta and fellowship training in colon and rectal surgery at Northwell Health in New York City. There, I trained with surgeons performing some of the highest volumes of minimally invasive and robotic colorectal surgeries in the tri-state area. I am proud to bring that expertise to NYU Langone.

I care for patients with a broad spectrum of colorectal conditions, including colon and rectal cancer, diverticulitis, inflammatory bowel disease, rectal prolapse, and anorectal issues such as hemorrhoids, fissures, and fistulas or abscesses. Whenever appropriate, I utilize robotic-assisted surgery, which offers many benefits, including reduced postoperative pain, shorter hospital stays, and quicker recovery times for most patients.

I understand that colorectal conditions can be sensitive and challenging for patients to discuss. Providing a supportive and compassionate environment is a cornerstone of my practice. I make it a priority to ensure each patient feels comfortable and heard. I am also committed to patient education, empowering individuals to fully understand their condition and treatment options. My recommendations are always based on the latest evidence, and I approach care thoughtfully, recognizing that surgery is not the solution for every case. When it isn’t, I work collaboratively with patients to explore alternatives that align with their health goals and lifestyles.

At NYU Langone, I am part of a multidisciplinary team that includes specialists in gastroenterology, medical oncology, radiation oncology, radiology, pathology, and nutrition. For patients with complex cases, especially cancer, we conduct multidisciplinary tumor boards to develop comprehensive and personalized treatment plans. This collaborative approach ensures that patients benefit from a variety of expert perspectives.

In addition to patient care, I am deeply committed to education and advancing the field of colorectal surgery. I actively teach minimally invasive and robotic surgical techniques to the next generation of surgeons and frequently lecture on topics related to colorectal disease and surgery. By staying at the forefront of surgical advancements and sharing that knowledge, I aim to provide the safest and most effective care to my patients.
