Jane Swedler, MD

From a young age, I knew I wanted to pursue a career in medicine—I hoped to help improve the health of patients and communities. My focus in medicine has always been on preventive healthcare, while addressing the multifaceted medical and psychosocial issues of patient care. Although I initially chose family medicine as a primary specialty, it soon became apparent that I had an affinity for treating adolescents. Adolescence often raises a variety of questions and concerns that are specific to a young person’s health, because it is a time of great physical, emotional, and social change. Adolescent medicine serves as an important resource for teenagers and families to manage adolescent healthcare needs and to coordinate transition into adult healthcare settings.

I am a specialist in the Adolescent Medicine Program at NYU Langone Hospital—Long Island, where we provide comprehensive and unique healthcare to patients between the ages of 11 and 25. The program includes general adolescent primary care as well as subspecialty consultation services. Adolescent Medicine specialists consult with patients on a multitude of concerns, including routine gynecologic and contraceptive care, menstrual disorders, diagnosis and management of sexually transmitted illnesses, depression and anxiety, eating disorders, and care for adolescents who identify as LGBTQ+.

The Adolescent Medicine Program is dedicated to helping patients and their families optimize health and successfully navigate adolescence in an environment that is respectful, supportive, responsive, accessible, and rooted in individualized patient- and family-centered care.
