As an NYU Langone speech–language pathologist specializing in cleft and craniofacial conditions, I provide speech evaluation and therapy for children and adults.

The patients I often see have conditions that cause difficulty with velopharyngeal closure, an important aspect of speech function that can impact their ability to be understood. Such conditions include cleft lip and cleft palate, Pierre Robin sequence, hemifacial microsomia, genetic syndromes such as 22q11.2 deletion syndrome or Treacher Collins syndrome, dental or occlusal anomalies, pediatric head and neck cancer, and congenitally missing oral structures.

Through our clinic for velopharyngeal dysfunction, I provide a unique analysis of a patient’s velopharyngeal closure by determining if the issue is structural or a learned behavior that can be addressed with ongoing therapy. From there, I work closely with our pediatric plastic surgeons and craniofacial plastic surgery teams. Together we determine if a child or adult might benefit from speech therapy, surgery, or a combination of the two. Every speech and velopharyngeal dysfunction pattern requires an individualized therapeutic, medical, and surgical approach.

I also consult with our registered dietitian and nurse practitioners about any feeding difficulties patients may be having. For infants and younger children, I work with their parents or caregivers to deliver the best-possible evidence-based practice for feeding and speech outcomes.

In addition to my clinical work, I am a member of the American Cleft Palate Craniofacial Association and the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. I am also a member of various special interest groups within each association and attend annual meetings. I regularly present on the speech and feeding challenges my patients face at various conferences and online platforms.

I love watching the children I work with realize their potential as they develop with simple supports in place to help maximize their growth. As I follow them through every stage of their treatment, it’s gratifying to know I played a small part in helping them on their journey.
