Sampath R. Kumar, MD

There was a shortage of physicians in India when I was growing up there, in the 1970s. I have always had a keen interest in the sciences, particularly biology. With this in mind, my family encouraged me to pursue a career in medicine. Because surgery is hands-on, I was drawn to this field and found a true passion for seeing my knowledge and efforts bring about better health for those in need.

I am both a general surgeon and vascular surgeon. Much of my practice involves surgical repair of hernias and surgery for diseases of the gallbladder, stomach, small intestine, and colon, mostly via minimally invasive laparoscopic techniques. In addition, I have extensive experience in management of cancerous and noncancerous conditions of the breast.

I am one of the few doctors in Brooklyn who perform peritoneal dialysis catheter insertion as well as complex vascular access procedures for hemodialysis.

When evaluating patients, I always take the time to listen, paying special attention to details about their symptoms. I also include family members and caregivers in treatment discussions because their support can help improve outcomes. My medical and surgical recommendations reflect what I would do for a member of my own family. My patients are never just a number.

I have been providing surgical care in Brooklyn for about four decades and am well respected within the community. For the past several years, I have been an NYU Langone faculty member, which has helped to improve the care I provide to patients. It is a tremendous asset to have immediate access to an excellent nursing team, surgical technicians, and operating room facilities. I work with dedicated, supportive, and courteous office staff, who understand patient needs and go above and beyond to help.

I also enjoy teaching residents and medical students about surgery and how to care for the whole patient. It is very rewarding to help new surgeons realize their potential in healthcare.

I have been selected as one of America’s Best Physicians by the National Consumer Advisory Board for several years. It is an honor and privilege to serve the NYU Langone community.
