I chose a career in surgery because I was drawn to the opportunity to identify a problem and, when appropriate, provide a definitive solution. As my training progressed, I learned that being a good surgeon is not simply about performing an operation. It is about understanding when surgery will truly benefit a patient, selecting the right approach, and developing a treatment plan that reflects each person’s individual needs and goals.

As a general surgeon at NYU Langone, I treat a broad range of conditions involving the abdomen and gastrointestinal tract, including gallbladder disease, appendicitis, diverticulitis, colon disease, bowel obstruction, gastroesophageal reflux disease, and hiatal and paraesophageal hernias. I also care for patients with inguinal, umbilical, ventral, incisional, and recurrent hernias, as well as soft tissue conditions.

I have a particular interest in minimally invasive and robotic surgery, including advanced hernia repair, foregut and gallblader disease. Whenever appropriate, I use laparoscopic or robotic techniques to perform complex operations through smaller incisions, with the goals of reducing postoperative discomfort and helping patients return to their normal activities sooner. My advanced training in gastrointestinal and minimally invasive surgery also allows me to offer minimally invasive approaches for selected patients with complex or recurrent conditions who may otherwise require a larger open operation.

I believe that choosing the right operation is just as important as performing it well. Not every hernia requires immediate repair, and not every abdominal condition requires surgery. I take time to explain the diagnosis, discuss surgical and nonsurgical options, and review the benefits and risks of each approach so that my patients can make informed decisions about their care.

My surgical training has taken place in both Brazil and the United States and includes experience in general, gastrointestinal, oncologic, and minimally invasive surgery. I completed my general surgery residency at NYU Grossman Long Island School of Medicine and advanced fellowship training in gastrointestinal, minimally invasive, bariatric, and robotic surgery at Mount Sinai Health System in New York City.

I understand that undergoing surgery can be intimidating. My goal is for every patient to leave our visit with a clear understanding of their condition, why I am—or am not—recommending surgery, and what they can expect from treatment and recovery. I approach each patient with the same care, attention, and thoughtful decision-making that I would want for a member of my own family.
