David T. Stern, MD, PhD

As vice chair for education and academic affairs at the NYU Grossman School of Medicine and chief of medicine service at the Margaret Cochran Corbin VA Medical Center in Manhattan, I am dedicated to advancing medical education and providing exceptional patient care. My passion lies in fostering the next generation of healthcare professionals while ensuring that my patients receive comprehensive, coordinated care.

I specialize in internal medicine, with a particular focus on chronic conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and cardiovascular disease. With over 30 years of experience, I bring a wealth of knowledge and expertise to my practice. My commitment to medical education is reflected in my extensive research on professional behavior in medicine, and I have authored over 100 abstracts and papers on the subject. I am honored to be a member of the Gold Humanism Honor Society and the New York Academy of Medicine, as well as a fellow of the American College of Physicians.

Throughout my career, I have been dedicated to improving the quality of medical education both locally and internationally. I have served as a consultant and visiting professor at numerous medical schools, conducting workshops and seminars on teaching, learning, and evaluating professionalism. Since joining NYU Langone in 2013, I have led efforts to transform the internal medicine residency program, enhance faculty teaching skills, and promote diversity and inclusion within the department. I also co-lead the U.S. site for a master's program in health professions education, which has trained over 40 faculty members to become highly skilled educators.

My journey into medicine began with a bachelor's degree in anthropology from Harvard University, followed by a medical degree from Vanderbilt Medical School. I completed my internship and residency in internal medicine at Tufts/New England Medical Center and pursued a fellowship in ambulatory care and research at Stanford and the Palo Alto Veterans Affairs Medical Center. I also earned a PhD from Stanford University School of Education in curriculum and teacher education. My dedication to medical education and patient care continues to inspire my work every day.
