Vasculitis is an immune system disorder that causes destructive inflammation of the blood vessels, including arteries, veins, and capillaries. The many types of vasculitis are categorized by the size of the blood vessel affected. Because vasculitis may disrupt blood flow to organs and tissues throughout the body, an early and accurate diagnosis is critical to avoiding permanent damage to the affected organs and to the blood vessels themselves.
