NYU Langone doctors are experts at managing the highly individualized nature of vascular malformations, whether in the chest, abdomen, pelvis, arms, or legs.
Some types of vascular malformations, such as arteriovenous malformations, require monitoring by your doctor every one to two years to prevent complications, such as compression of organs, nerve pain, swelling in the arms or legs, and internal bleeding. Monitoring includes imaging with magnetic resonance angiogram (MRA) and duplex ultrasound or CT scans.
If a vascular malformation in a limb affects your ability to move with ease, specialists at NYU Langone’s Rusk Rehabilitation are available to help. After a consultation with one of our physical medicine doctors, therapists at Rusk Rehabilitation can design a program of physical or occupational therapy to increase mobility and manage discomfort.
Treatment for vascular malformations is not always medically necessary, but some people may consider cosmetic treatment for malformations, such as hemangiomas, that are visible on the surface of the skin. NYU Langone doctors can recommend medical or surgical treatments for these types of vascular malformations in children and adults.
Cosmetic surgery is only recommended when the vascular malformation can be surgically removed without causing harm to nearby muscles or organs.
Other types of malformations eventually disappear without treatment.
