About 20 percent of young women who have a UTI experience another one. Men who have a UTI are more likely to have another because bacteria can hide deep inside the tissue of the prostate, the gland that produces fluid for ejaculation.

If you have frequent UTIs, your doctor may recommend purchasing a home test kit to use when symptoms begin. Be sure to contact your doctor if the test results indicate you may have a UTI.

You can take steps to help prevent a UTI, including not holding in urine, cleaning the opening to the urethra after sexual activity, and drinking plenty of fluids, especially water.
