NYU Langone endocrinologists and endocrine surgeons provide you with the most effective follow-up care possible as you continue on the road to recovery.
Surgical treatment is very successful for the majority of people who have hyperparathyroidism and are treated at NYU Langone.
Hypercalcemia, or elevated levels of calcium in the blood, associated with hyperparathyroidism typically resolves very quickly after surgery. For this reason, many people experience improvement in symptoms within days of surgery.
NYU Langone surgeons recommend a follow-up appointment one to two weeks after surgery to ensure that there are no complications. They also recommend that you meet with your endocrinologist shortly thereafter to assess your improvement.
Your endocrinologist may want to see you regularly if you are receiving medical treatment for hyperparathyroidism.
During follow-up visits, the doctor assesses your parathyroid hormone levels and calcium levels. This enables your doctor to ensure that the condition is stabilized or to determine if surgery may be necessary.
