Remote Monitoring of Cardiac Devices

If you have received a pacemaker, implantable cardioverter defibrillator, or implanted cardiac loop recorder, information from that device can be transmitted regularly to the cardiac device team at NYU Langone’s Heart Rhythm Center.

Your device is paired with a monitoring system. This may take the form of an app on your cell phone or a desk unit that fits on your bedside table. The monitoring system receives data from your cardiac device and wirelessly transmits this information to the cardiac device team. Our experts encourage you to set up an NYU Langone Health MyChart account, which allows you to confirm the team has received the data.

Our cardiac device team reviews the reports from your device each business day. If our experts see something concerning, they contact you or your doctor. It is important to remember that cardiac implantable electronic devices and patient monitoring systems are not emergency systems.

If you experience symptoms of arrhythmia, such as dizziness, fainting, or a racing heart, contact the cardiac device team. If these symptoms occur outside of regular business hours, please call your doctor or visit the nearest emergency department.

Typically, you visit your doctor annually. During this visit, your doctor reviews the data from the device to determine whether you need another therapy, such as medication, or if your device needs reprogramming or replacing. Reprogramming the device to improve your heart rhythm can only be done in the office. It is a painless procedure that uses a special remote to wirelessly communicate with your device and change its settings.
