Treatment of alcohol and other substance use disorders often combines medical care, therapy, and long‑term support to achieve meaningful recovery. For many individuals, treatment begins with a comprehensive evaluation that may recommend supervised detoxification to help safely manage withdrawal symptoms.

After this stabilization phase, evidence‑based medications can reduce cravings, reduce the risk of relapse, and prevent harmful consequences of substance use. For many people, psychotherapy helps to address the behavioral and psychological aspects of addiction. Types of psychotherapy may include individual and group counseling, family therapy, motivational interviewing, and cognitive‑behavioral approaches, which help people strengthen coping skills and craft lasting support systems. Addiction is a treatable condition, and many people live full, rewarding lives with treatment.

Every person’s journey is unique, which is why programs accommodate a range of settings from inpatient to outpatient treatment. For example, those with more severe substance use may benefit from intensive inpatient care, while others may achieve significant benefits in outpatient programs while living at home, working, or studying. With proper treatment and ongoing support, many people recover and regain control of their lives.

Addiction Treatment Programs at NYU Langone

If you or a loved one is struggling with substance use, NYU Langone’s inpatient and outpatient addiction treatment programs offer compassionate, personalized care to support recovery and long-term healing.

Hospital-based Services

Addiction treatment is available across several NYU Langone campuses. For patients who are hospitalized with medical or surgical issues, hospitalization can be an opportune moment to begin treatment. At NYU Langone’s Tisch Hospital and Kimmel Pavilion, we offer dedicated addiction psychiatry consultation services that can start medications and refer to treatment programs after discharge. Our other hospital campuses are also able to provide comprehensive evaluations and referrals to treatment for patients who are admitted for medical or surgical issues.

Across all other campuses, every patient receives tobacco, alcohol, prescription medication, and other substance use (TAPS) screening as part of routine care. Positive results are addressed by a dedicated behavioral health social work (BHSW) team, which provides counseling and referrals to appropriate treatment resources as needed.

Outpatient Services

Our outpatient services offer flexible, compassionate care to support recovery while you continue your daily life.

NYU Langone Psychiatry Associates

NYU Langone Psychiatry Associates offers comprehensive, evidence-based treatment for individuals struggling with substance use disorders. Care is provided by board-certified addiction psychiatrists and an experienced multidisciplinary team. Each patient begins with a thorough assessment to develop a personalized treatment plan addressing both substance use and co-occurring mental health concerns.

Treatment options include individual psychotherapy and group therapy, with specialized groups focusing on harm reduction and community reinforcement and family training (CRAFT) approaches. Medication-assisted treatments are available, including buprenorphine, naltrexone, acamprosate, and emerging options for stimulant use disorders. When clinically safe and appropriate, outpatient detoxification services are offered to support a safe transition to recovery.

This integrated approach helps patients achieve and sustain recovery through compassionate, collaborative, and evidence-based care.
