Research Summary

My research focuses on improving patient care through innovations in how we train doctors.

To this end, I lead the Precision & Translational Medical Education Laboratory within the Institute for Innovations in Medical Education that connects faculty, data scientists, informaticists, and trainees conducting cutting-edge grant-funded research to advance the emerging dual paradigms of precision and translational medical education. Fundamentally, we seek to conduct research that will generate an evidence base for providing the best education to the right trainee at the right time.

To do this, we apply informatics, health services, and artificial intelligence (AI) approaches to large data sets about medical students, resident physicians, and practicing doctors. Doing so allows us to generate personalized insights for individual learners, programs, and accreditation agencies.

Our research bridges the classroom-to-bedside divide, yielding measurable improvements in patient care and driving continuous improvement in how we train the next generation of physicians.
